Damages form
The Damages form enables you to update damages for the selected equipment. You can also use the Damages form to add damages or delete existing damages. In addition, you can use the Damages form to mark a damage item as repaired.
N4 maintains the damages associated with each unit facility visit, separately. For example, there are three units with the same container as the primary equipment but in different transit states, such as Departed, Retired, and Yard. You can maintain a separate set of damages for each unit even though the container associated with the three units is the same.
The Damages tab (on page 1) in the Equipment Inspector (on page 1) displays the damages associated with the most recent unit facility visit. However, the Damages tab (on page 1) in the Unit Inspector (on page 1) displays the damages associated with the selected unit.
When you stuff an empty unit (on page 1), N4 retires the selected unit and creates a new full unit. If the empty unit has damages associated with it, N4 persists the damages to the new full unit.
When you strip a full unit (on page 1), N4 retires the selected full unit and creates a new empty unit. If the full unit has damages associated with it, N4 persists the damages to the new empty unit.
When you attach a damaged equipment (on page 1) as a payload or a carrier, N4 retains the damages associated with the payload or the carrier (chassis).
To update damages for the primary equipment in a unit, use one of the following:

If you do not select a record in the list view or select multiple records, the Update Damages option is disabled.
You can use the Damages form to:
N4 records the following service events when you update damages for a unit:
UNIT_DAMAGED: If the unit was previously undamaged and you record a new damage without a repaired date.
UNIT_REPAIRED: If the unit was previously undamaged and you record a new damage with a repaired date.
N4 also records this event if you update an existing damage as repaired along with the other damage information such as width, depth, etc.
UNIT_DAMAGES_DELETED: If the unit damage is deleted.
UNIT_DAMAGES_UPDATED: If a unit is already damaged and you add a new damage to it.
For example,
First, record Damage 1 N4 records the UNIT_DAMAGED event.
Then, update Damage 1 N4 records the UNIT_DAMAGES_UPDATED event.
Then, record Damage 2 N4 records a UNIT_DAMAGED event.
Then, repair Damage 1 (by recording Repaired on Date/Time) N4 records the UNIT_REPAIRED event.
Also, repair Damage 2 (by recording Repaired on Date/Time) N4 records the UNIT_REPAIRED event.
Now, record Damage 3 N4 records the UNIT_DAMAGED event.
Delete Damage 3 N4 records a UNIT_DAMAGE_DELETED event.
Again, update Damage 1 (which is a repaired damage) N4 records a UNIT_DAMAGES_UPDATED event.
Record Damages 4 and 5 N4 records a UNIT_DAMAGED event for each damage record.
You can use the History, Events tab (on page 1) in the Unit Inspector (on page 1) to view the event history of a unit. The Notes field in the Event History tab explains the damage changes made to the unit and the Changes field displays the values changed as per the event in the following fields:

Unit Level and Gate Transaction Level damages
In N4, you can record damages at the unit level or at the gate transaction level. At the unit level, all the units with the same ID (same primary equipment) share the same set of damages.
When you use the Update Damages option to update the damages for a unit, you update the unit level damages. Therefore, when you update the damages for one unit, N4 updates the damages associated with all the units with the same ID.
For example, if you have a container that is associated with a Departed (on page 1) unit and an Active unit, if you update the damages for the Active unit, N4 also updates the damages for the Departed unit and vice versa.
You can also record damages for a unit as it comes in or goes out the gate. When you use the Damages - Add/Edit form during a gate transaction, you record gate transaction level damages. Each gate transaction has its own set of damages and these damages are not shared. These damages are associated with the gate transaction and are not affected by any updates to the damages associated with the unit. You can use the Gate Transaction Inspector to view the damages recorded at the gate transaction level.
For example, when you deliver an Import container, any damages recorded for the unit are also copied to the gate transaction. However, if the same unit returns as an Export container, a new set of damages can be recorded for the unit and these are associated with the new gate transaction. If no damages are recorded for the Export container during the gate-in process, the gate transaction for the export unit does not have any damages.
